The role of CT virtual endoscopy for evaluation of the airway
نویسندگان
چکیده
Purpose Evaluation of airway stenosis secondary to head and neck lesions has been performed routinely with CT scan and endoscopy (1). Endoscopy of a stenotic airway can be difficult, and can be associated with compromise of the airway (2). CT virtual endoscopy (CTVE) provides a noninvasive means of evaluating the airways while simultaneously studying the head and neck soft tissues including vasculature(1–3). We will assess the utility of CTVE in individuals with airway compromise.

Intrathoracic Airway Tree Segmentation from CT Images Using a Fuzzy Connectivity Method
Introduction: Virtual bronchoscopy is a reliable and efficient diagnostic method for primary symptoms of lung cancer. The segmentation of airways from CT images is a critical step for numerous virtual bronchoscopy applications. Materials and Methods: To overcome the limitations of the fuzzy connectedness method, the proposed technique, called fuzzy connectivity - fuzzy C-mean (FC-FCM), utilized...

OBJECTIVES To study the use of helical computed tomography 2-D and 3-D images, and virtual endoscopy in the evaluation of airway disease in neonates, infants and children and its value in lesion detection, characterisation and extension. METHODS Conducted at Al-Noor Hospital, Makkah, Saudi Arabia, from January 1 to June 30, 2006, the study comprised of 40 patients with strider, having various...
متن کاملParaglottic and Pre-epiglottic Space Abscess in Adults: Report of Two Cases
Introduction: Acute epiglottitis or supraglottitis is a rapidly progressing upper respiratory tract infection that can often threaten the airway patency. Epiglottic abscess that expands to the paraglottic (PGS) or preepiglottic (PES) space and acute airway obstruction constitute rare complications, exclusively presented in adults. Case Report: We report two cases. In t...
متن کاملTechniques in Laryngeal Imaging—The State of the Art and Beyond
To date, computed tomography (CT) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) serve as the main techniques for imaging the larynx, although the use of positron emission tomography (PET) is increasing. Laryngeal trauma and evaluation of laryngeal malignancy represent the two most common indications for radiographic evaluation of the larynx. It is evaluation of the latter, however, to which the current ...
متن کاملTumoral and non-tumoral trachea stenoses: evaluation with three-dimensional CT and virtual bronchoscopy
BACKGROUND We evaluated the ability of 3D-CT and virtual bronchoscopy to estimate trachea stenosis in comparison to conventional axial CT and fiberoptic bronchoscopy, with a view to assist thoracic surgeons in depicting the anatomical characteristics of tracheal strictures. METHODS Spiral CT was performed in 16 patients with suspected tracheal stenoses and in 5 normal subjects. Tracheal steno...
